2011: OBJ, IBB Clash Over S-West govs’ Support—Vanguard
New York [RR] IBADAN—FORMER Military President, General Ibrahim
Babangida(rtd) yesterday called the bluff of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo over alleged statement credited to him that South-West governors should not support his presidential ambition come 2011.
IBB said if three out of five governors in the region were in support of him that amounted to 60 per cent. This he said was better than the support the former ruler is having among the northern governors.
According to IBB’s representative, Alhaji Abdulkadir Kure, if he could have the support of the three governors, then he had got a pass mark.
He said: “When I read the story, I called Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who denied the reports credited to him. But, even, if he said that, the report had it that three out of the five governors in the South-West are supporting IBB in his quest to become the President. That is 60 per cent. If it is 60 per cent, we have more governors supporting him in the South-West than in the North.”
The failure of IBB to make good his promise dampened the morale of his teeming supporters in the region as he tactically avoided the much-touted visit following security reports.
IBB’s aborted visit
The visit of the former ruler was so much publicised that residents in the state were anxiously waiting to catch a glimpse of him many years after he “stepped aside” from the governance of the country.
Many people trooped out as early as 9.00a.m. but it was some minutes past 4 p.m. before they learnt that IBB had sent a representative.
One of the coordinators of the campaign said IBB went for the eighth day Fidau prayer of one of his relations who died in Yola.
However, Vanguard gathered that the ‘evil genius’ was not comfortable with security reports, particularly the warning from the National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, as relayed by the state broadcasting outfit that he should not come to the zone after depriving one of the illustrious sons of the region, late Moshood Abiola, from becoming the President after winning the 1993 election.
Olubadan disappointed
Among those that were disappointed was the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana, who was reported to have left the palace at Aremo around 2p.m. after waiting endlessly for the former President.
A source told Vanguard that the monarch, who is time-conscious, waited two hours after the agreed time before he left the palace for his residence.
